During the war
At first, the American major John Parker ordered the soldiers to disperse, but a shot rang out, followed by many more shots coming from the British soldiers. As Parker's men dispersed due to the shots, the British advanced to the Minutemen, who were guarding the building. The British released shots, mortally wounding some. The Minutemen fired a volley in response, killing a large number of soldiers and wounding nine. One of the most notable events in the Revolution was the first gunshot. That shot is known as the “shot heard 'round the world.”
