Some British Soldiers Were Drunk – The British troops had been marching all night, and some reportedly drank rum from confiscated supplies along the way, affecting their performance.
Parker's Militia Didn’t Expect a Fight – Most of John Parker’s men assumed they were only gathering as a to show resistance, not to actually fight. Many were shocked when shots were fired.
British Regulars Got Lost – Some British troops got lost on the retreat, leading to isolated skirmishes where they were picked off by hidden colonial snipers.
John Parker Was Dying – Captain John Parker, leader of the Lexington militia, was battling tuberculosis at the time.
A British Soldier Played Dead to Survive – During the brutal retreat to Boston, a wounded British soldier pretended to be dead so American militia wouldn’t finish him off. Later, he managed to crawl away and rejoin his unit.
Farmers and Women Took Shots at the British – It wasn’t just militia fighting. As the British retreated, angry farmers and even some colonial women fired at them from windows and behind stone walls, adding to the chaos.
